The Stack On 16 gun safe line up is a little unusual. It contains some very different styles of rifle safes, but it also has some very cool options. In fact, it even has one of the only two models that Stack On makes specifically for tactical weapons.
The GCDG-9216 Security Cabinet
As the title suggests, to fairly and accurately rate this secure storage option from Stack On, you have to first understand that it is more of a gun cabinet than it is a safe. That being said it is still a very solid choice for you if your main concern is having a place to keep your firearms out of the reach of other people.
What makes this gun locker different from other 16 gun cabinets out there is that it’s actually able to store your choice of 16 rifles up to a sizable 31 rifles, depending on how you set it up. It’s actually marketed as the Stack On 16-31 Gun Convertible Double-Door Steel Security Cabinet.
How big is it?
Due to the fact that this is a double-door cabinet, it’s definitely a little bit larger than most of the other gun safes that are specced as having a 16-gun capacity. It actually measures out to be 55 inches high by 38 inches wide by 18 inches deep.
It has two doors, and two separate areas. You have the option to use one side for rifles and the other for storage, or you can use both sides for rifles, thus giving you space for up to 31 rifles.
If you opt to use one for storage, Stack On includes four removable shelves that come with foam padding. That leaves a lot of room for customizing the interior. If you decide to only use it for long guns, they also include extra gun barrel rests so you can use them on both sides.
What else should I know?
The Stack On GCDG-9216 is lighter than a similarly sized safe, but at 147 pounds, it’s not something that you want to toss around by yourself. It’s also a little awkward to move around solo due to its dimensions. It does however have pre-drilled mounting holes, so you can anchor it in place, and it even has pre-drilled holes on the top so that you can mount a Stack On pistol safe to it should you want to expand your storage space.
Although it’s considered a cabinet, that doesn’t mean it isn’t secure. Each reinforced steel door uses a 3-point locking system, and the steel, though thinner than a vault or fire safe, isn’t something you can pry your way into. If someone without a key wants to get inside, they are going to have a real tough time, and they are not going to crack it quickly.
Lastly, it’s only available with the key locks and in hunter green.

The SS-16-MB-E and its Variants
More than a basic cabinet, but lighter and smaller than a vault, the Stack On SS-16-MB-E is a great “middle-ground” 16 gun safe for those who want something a bit more sophisticated than a simple gun locker.
The item number might seem a bit confusing and difficult to remember, but by breaking it down we can get a broad view of what exactly this safe has to offer.
The reason that this is important is because if you are considering this model, it has a couple or variants that are extremely similar except for one or two features, and understanding the model number is a great way to keep them straight in your head.
So what exactly does SS-16-MB-E stand for?
The “SS” in the model number is short for Security Safe, which is one of the several categories in the Stack On secure storage line up. There are actually safes as low as an 8-gun capacity all the way up to a 22-gun capacity in this particular category, so 16 guns is pretty close to the middle.
The “16” is rather self explanatory, so we can just move right to the “MB.” The “M” is a little bit of a guess, but paired with the “B” for black, the two together would be short for matte black. It’s actually a black epoxy finish, so it makes sense.
Finally, the last part of the model number represents the locking mechanism. In this case the “E” represents an electronic keypad lock. This exact same safe is also available with a combination lock: see model number SS-16-MB-C and for a hunter green model with a combination lock check out the SS-16-MG-C.
What about the specific details?
Aside form having the interior space to store up to 16 long guns, the total available interior storage is 11.37 cubic feet. The internal dimensions are 54.86 inches high by 20.71 inches deep wide by 17.27 inches deep. If you compare this to the smaller capacity rifle safes you’ll notice it offer more room with all three dimensions.
Externally, it measures at 55.125 inches in height by 20.875 wide and 20.1 inches deep. This size safe things start to get a little bulky, so measuring where you plan on storing it is highly recommended.
It’s nice and secure, featuring 3 live locking bolts as well as 3 dead bolts, giving you 6 locking points in total. The interior is nice and cushy for your rifle as it is completely carpeted. And, it even comes with 1 removable shelf and a 2-tray organizer. You get quite a lot out of this Stack On 16 gun safe for a very fair price.

The Elite E-16-MG-C
The Stack On E-16-MG-C is the smallest rifle safe in the Elite series of safes. When compared to the cabinets reviewed previously, this is much more of a premium safe. Though the smallest of the series, it’s still plenty roomy as it’s designed to hold up to 16 rifles or shotguns.
Why is this considered a premium safe?
The first thing you notice about this long gun safe is how thick the steel is. The outside of it measures 59 inches high by 23.38 inches wide by 20.75 inches deep. Compare that to the interior measurements of 56.69 inches high by 21 inches wide by 14.5 inches deep and you can get an idea for the thickness of the steel.
Though the sides and door are thicker, you still get just over 10 cubic feet of interior space. You also get a much heavier weight, as this comes in around 350 pounds.
Besides the thicker, heavier steel, you get a more secure door, with 5 live action locking bolts instead of the normal 3 that come standard on most Stack On gun cabinets. When you add in the 3 dead bolts, you get a total of 8 very secure locking points. That makes prying or forcing your way in neigh impossible.
The hunter green E-16-MG-C also comes standard with a combination lock, so you don’t have to mess with batteries or electronics, but if you prefer an electronic keypad lock, the black E-16-MB-E is the safe for you. Beside the color and lock, it has all of the same measurements and features as the hunter green model.
They are capable of keeping your long guns and other gear safe for up to ½ an hour in temperatures as high as 1400 degrees Fahrenheit.
As the price denotes, you are stepping up from the thinner sheet metal sided rifle cabinets, but you are getting a serious safe in return. It doesn’t matter which lock you prefer, both models offer lots of protection, and on top of that, they both look stunning.

The 16-gun TC-16-GB-K Tactical Cabinet
Part of the newest line up in Stack On’s gun safe collection, the TC-16-GB-K was made to fill a specific gap in the market. There are not many safes that are designed to properly hold a tactical weapon.
What makes this a tactical security cabinet and not just another cabinet?
As previously stated, this was designed with tactical rifles in mind. In fact, the entire cabinet is built around the ability to comfortably store 2 tactical weapons, like an AR-15, right in the center of the safe.
Each side of the cabinet is built to hold up to 7 rifles or shotguns, for a total of 14. Those 14, plus the 2 tactical weapons is why the Stack On TC-16-GB-K is technically a 16-gun safe. However, you can also convert one to the sides into a storage section with the included removable shelving. There is 1 full-sized shelf and 3 half-sized shelves available to use however you see fit.
The overall size of the cabinet measures out to be 55 inches by 21 inches by 18 inches (H x W x D). It’s not very heavy, weighing 90 pounds, so you’ll most likely feel safer by taking advantage of the mounting holes.
>> Still too small? Here’s the 20-gun version.
It’s really slick looking, with a black and silver finish. The key lock is simple yet functional, and it’s secure as it uses a double-bitted key coded cylinder. The door looks really nice and has a couple silver/chrome riveted tread plates that really make this 16-gun safe stand out from most others.
For a low-cost gun cabinet that makes it easy to store and get to your tactical rifles, this is a very good option. It keeps all your stuff locked away from unwanted hands, but your tactical rifles are easy for you to get to. It’s well worth checking out if you have been looking for something like this.
