If you are looking for a Stack On 18 gun cabinet or safe, there are currently only two options. One is basically what would be considered a rifle cabinet, while the other is a fire-resistant safe from the specialStack On Buck Commander line. You can best separate which is the better option for you depending on the level of security that you are looking for.
The GCB-18-C Stack On 18 Gun Cabinet
The GCB-18-C is a fully convertible steel rifle cabinet with an 18-gun capacity. It’s not going to win any awards for being the shiniest or fanciest gun cabinet, but it gives you exactly what you need to lock up your rifles and keep them away from unwanted or unauthorized users.
What are the measurements?
This long gun cabinet isn’t on the small or the large side. It fits right about in the middle. The actual measurements are that it is 55 inches tall, 21 inches wide, and 18 inches deep.
The way you arrange the interior really affects how and what you can store inside. While it’s technically an 18 gun safe, you can move the removable shelving around, which will give you a few different configurations.
You can make the Stack On GCB-18-C into a half rifle cabinet and half storage cabinet. Or, you can make it into mostly a storage cabinet that will still hold a few rifles too. This versatility make this cabinet a great option if you don’t currently have 18 rifles, but you plan to grow you smaller collection over the next few years.
Is it heavy?
This cabinet is not very heavy. As the sides resemble more of a sheet metal thickness than that of a vault style safe, it’s fairly light for the storage capacity it offers. It weighs about 75 pounds, so most people can move it around without the help of another pair of hands. It is bulky though, so it can be a little tricky to navigate corners and tight areas with.
To assist in securing the cabinet from the potential of getting picked up and carried off, Stack On has added some pre-drilled anchor holes into the safe. It even has some pre-drilled mounting holes on the top that perfectly match Stack On pistol safes, so you can mount one to the this cabinet, and then this cabinet to the floor.
What are the rest of the details?
The thing that makes this rifle cabinet tick are the removable shelves. It comes with one top shelf that is permanent, and then 4 shelves that are removable and adjustable. They also come with foam padding to help protect whatever you place on them.
The safe is locked with a simple yet secure key lock. The lock is backed with a hardened steel plate to prevent drilling break-ins. The cabinet door has a 3-point locking system so it’s not something that you can just pry open.
The GCB-18-C is available in only a black epoxy finish that is accented with conservatively used silver accents.
The Stack On Buck Commander BC-18-MB-E-S
This is the smallest option available in the specialty Buck Commander series of Stack On Safes. The Buck Commander line, which you may have heard of from the popular television series Duck Dynasty, is a mix of gear safes, bow safes, and rifle safes. This particular option functions as either an 18 gun safe, or a 9 gun safe with storage.
What is the size and weight?
This is much more a safe than it is a cabinet, so it’s a little big larger than most rifle cabinets of similar storage capacity. It measures out to be 55 inches high, 20.5 inches wide, and 23.5 inches deep.
You might be able to squeeze it into some larger closets, but if you can’t, due to its depth, don’t worry. The BC-18-MB-E-S is rather nice-looking, so having out in the open is not a bad thing.
All packed up and ready to ship, this thing weighs a very solid 280 pounds. So, when you are moving it around your home, you might want to have a friend or two handy.
The good is that with all that weight, a burglar isn’t going to have an easy go of it while trying to remove this safe from you home to crack off-site. They will have to do the job wherever you place the safe, or not at all.
What kind of security does it offer?
The first thing you notice is that the BC-18-MB-E-S uses an electronic keypad lock. Without knowing the combination, bypassing that is not something that most burglars will even want to try an attempt.
What you can’t see is the alarm that is part of the lock. If someone tried consecutively enters 3 wrong combinations, an alarm with sound.
The door is secured with 3 live-action locking bolts and an additional 2 dead bolts. With the lock, the steel plate, the locking bolts, and the weight of this safe, it’s not going to be an easy nut for any thief to crack.
And, fires won’t have much luck either. This Buck Commander safe is fire-resistant for up to 30 minutes against most common house fires that reach a maximum temperature of about 1400 degree Fahrenheit.
If you are in the market for either a Stack On 18 gun cabinet or a safe, these are your only two options. They are drastically different from one another aside from their storage capacity.
One is a basic, though very well made long gun cabinet, while the other is a higher end fire-resistant safe. No matter your preference, you can feel safe with either of them. They both do their respective job very well. The fact that they are California State DOJ approved for firearms storage is proof enough of that. You can’t go wrong with one of these.
