Large capacity rifle safes are an investment that require a fair amount of due diligence before you find the right one. It’s safe to say that a Stack On 36 gun safe is considered a large capacity safe, thus while looking into them, you want to make sure that you know you have chosen the one that will best suit your needs.
There are actually quite a few options in this capacity class, and while they have their own unique features, they are all built with quality and effectiveness in mind. Whichever you eventually settle on, you are sure to end up with something that will keep you, your family, and your rifles safe and sound for many many years.
The Elite E-36-MB-E-S
One of the safes in Stack On “Elite” lineup, the E-36-MB-E-S is almost too good to be true at its price point. Sure, it’s more than what you would expect to shell out for a similarly sized cabinet, but make no mistake; this is not a cabinet. It is a no nonsense big time steel box.
In order to fit 36 long guns, you know a safe has to have a healthy amount of internal space. This rifle safe actually offers 22.2 cubic feet of storage. All of that storage is squeezed into an interior that measures 56.69 inches high by 32.87 inches wide by 20.59 inches deep.
The black steel exterior is of course a bit larger when measured. The H x W x D numbers are 59 inches by 35.25 inches by 26.75 inches. The door, walls, and back are fairly thick, thus the considerable difference from the internal measurements.
Aside from the size, you’ll definitely want to pay attention to the fact that it weighs over 500 pounds. You’ll need to plan ahead on where you want to place it, because it’s bulky and heavy enough to only want to do that task once.
The biggest feature that makes this Elite Stack On 36 gun safe rise against some of its competition is that it’s made to be fire resistant. It’s verified to resist temperatures up to but not higher than 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. It can even resist temperatures that high not for a couple minutes but for up to thirty minutes.
It’s also super secure. It has a total of ten locking bolts (7 live action and 3 dead bolts). Add in the steel plate backed electronic keypad lock, and you can see why this is considered to be much more secure than a simple gun locker or cabinet would be.
And, while the most important aspect of what this rifle safe can do is its level of security, the manufacturers didn’t forget about making the inside as nice as the outside. There are 6 removable shelves, so you can customize the interior setup as you see fit, and there is a complete door storage system with removable holsters and zipper bags.
The Stack On E-36-MB-E-S gets the job done all across the board.
The TD-36-SB-E-S Total Defense
In the unlikely event that the Elite safe was not enough, another great Stack On 36 gun safe option is the TD-36-SB-E-S. The name Total Defense should give you all the information you need, but if you want some details to see why this live up to that name, keep reading.
As the “36” in the model number suggests, this safe is designed for storing up to 36 long guns. You of course can opt to store less than that in order to fit more gear, but no matter what you choose to keep safely inside, you get an ample 38 and a half cubic feet of space to do so.
That hefty interior space is due to interior measurements of 55.86 inches of height by 32.87 inches of width and a depth of 20.75 inches. That’s a heck of a lot of room, and even if you choose to store scoped weapons, you should be able to fit in a couple of dozen.
For moving and storing this rather large metal box, you’re going to want an extra pair of hands at the bare minimum. It weighs more than 500 pounds, and measures out to be 59 inches high by 35.25 inches wide and 26.75 inches deep. While all that weight makes it a royal pain in the backside to install, it’s actually a very good security feature, as it’s simply too heavy to carry away.
Why it's a Total Defense Safe
This “E” model Total defense safe is a hard nut to crack with its electronic keypad lock and super heavy-duty door. Don’t bother trying to pry it open or drill through it, as both are an act of futility.
Like the lock on the smaller 26 gun model, this one is backed by a hardened steel plate. The door is secured with an astounding 10 locking points, 3 of which are dead bolts. When you add in the sheer weight plus the option to mount it via the pre-drilled anchor points, busting through this on-site or trying to remove it to work on it off-site seems rather daunting.
The next layer of defense is the fact that you get not just 30, but 60 minutes of fire-resistance. If the fire does not exceed a typical maximum temperature of around 1400 degrees (Fahrenheit), then your rifles that are inside should be fine.
And, it doesn’t stop there. When properly mounted, the TD-36-SB-E-S grants you water-resistance. Your gear inside will remain as dry as a Las Vegas summer for up to 72 hours in up to 2 feet of standing water. There are special seals in and around the door of the safe that expand to provide this safety feature.
Finally, while not a safety feature, the adaptability of the interior does add to the total package. The shelving is removable and the door comes with pistol storage as well as some space for documents or other small-sized accessories.
Both of these 36 gun safes are fully compliant with the California DOJ gun safe rules and regulations. As the CA DOJ is the most strict in the country, you know that any of these are sure to do their job.
